1. What Is a Marathon?

A marathon is a long-distance running event in athletics that covers exactly 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles).
Its origins date back to 490 BCE, when a Greek soldier ran from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to deliver news of victory—and then collapsed and died from exhaustion.

Today, the marathon is considered the ultimate endurance test for runners around the world.

2. Why 42.195 Kilometers?

The distance was inspired by the legendary run from Marathon to Athens, estimated at around 40 km.
However, the official marathon length of 42.195 km was established at the 1908 London Olympics, adjusted so the race could start at Windsor Castle and finish in front of the Royal Box.
It became the globally recognized standard in 1921.

3. The 7 World Marathon Majors

For serious runners and dreamers alike, these are the most prestigious races in the world:

  • Boston Marathon (USA)

  • London Marathon (UK)

  • Berlin Marathon (Germany)

  • Chicago Marathon (USA)

  • New York City Marathon (USA)

  • Tokyo Marathon (Japan)

  • Abbott World Marathon Majors (Series including the six above)

Completing all six of the major marathons earns runners the coveted “Six Star Finisher” medal—an achievement celebrated across the global running community.
